Abstract:

In this talk, we develop a model of competitive performance when populations compete - such as in World Cup soccer, the Olympics, and international trade. We present a theoretical framework; an extreme-value statistical methodology; and empirical tests in chess, swimming, and beauty pageants based on logistic or Poisson regression. The findings show performance in these domains is substantially predictable from a few observable features of population and economic geography.
