Abstract - #303266
Title: The United Nations' Statistics Division Activities in Distributive Trades Statistics: An Outline
Author(s): Vladimir Markhonko*+
Companies: United Nations
Address: 2 UN Plaza, Room DC2-1542, New York, NY, 10017,
Keywords: United Nations ; Distributive trades
Abstract:

The distributive trades statistics was actively discussed at the U.N. Statistical Commission in the early 70s. Following those discussions, the Commission, adopted International Recommendations on Statistics of Distributive Trades and Services and requested UNSD to develop a manual that provided practical advice on its compilation. Such a manual, "Organization and Conduct of Distributive Trade Surveys," was prepared and published in 1977. The Commission did not have distributive trades statistics on its agenda in the late 70s; however, issues relevant to wholesale and retail trade were considered in the context of the Commission's work on service statistics and economic classifications. For example, the current UN definitions of wholesale and retail trade are provided in "International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities," adopted by the Commission in 2004. Distributive trade is an important economic activity, providing employment to a significant part of the population and contributing greatly to the GDP.
