Title: Phased Project Sequences to Reinforce DOE and Statistical Quality Methods Education

Abstract:

Phased project sequences are a single project broken up into specific phases to focus student activity on effective implementation of quality methods. We will discuss how these projects are designed to provide students with a highly realistic and tractable application of the material in a setting that closely matches a real-world product engineering scenario. Within this simulated product engineering environment, the students apply basic statistical methods, design of experiments, and statistical process control. Usual class work presents applications where the solution is readily available given the context. These projects provide an environment where the students are expected to come up with their own application. First-time applications often fail. These projects allow this initial failure to occur in a "safe" environment, where the instructor can teach students how to recover from these initial failures. The result is higher student confidence, improved understanding of material, and higher probability of student success in the real world. Results are confirmed by student evaluations and feedback from students in their first co-op activities in the following semester.
