Title: A Biostatistics Workbook for Medical Students

At the University of Louisville, as at most medical schools, classroom time is at a premium. In order to help students master fundamental ideas of probability distributions and statistical and graphical methods, a Biostatistics Workbook was developed. The 20-page workbook allowed students to graph with pen and pencil, highlight important graphical properties, and color or shade in histograms. Basic, fill-in-the-blank questions were to be completed. Students received a small amount of credit for completing the workbook, which they purchased for a nominal sum at the copy center. 139/152 students completed the workbook satisfactorily, and 132 filled out the survey questions. 46% "enjoyed using" the workbook, 70% said it helped them understand statistics, and 75% said it addressed important concepts. Only 21% thought the workbook should be mandatory, and only 21% wanted it to be longer. It was surprising that only 30% thought the workbook was "easy." Midterm exam scores indicated the students benefited from the use of the Biostatistics Workbook, as the average score on the biostatistics part of the 2001 exam increased to 80% from 70% in 2000.
