Abstract:

The National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY) is a complex and large-scale longitudinal survey developed to understand the development and well-being of Canadian children from childhood to adulthood. The survey began in 1994 and is collecting data every two years from a representative sample. The data for the first five cycles of NLSCY are now available to allow researchers to conduct analysis. Throughout the first five cycles of NLSCY, numerous challenges were encountered when deriving the longitudinal and cross-sectional design weights. To understand its impact on weighting, the NLSCY sample design will be presented. Some of the weighting challenges resulting from this complex sample will be presented briefly. Then, the focus will be on the nonresponse adjustments over the five cycles for the original cohort. Estimates for key variables and their associated variance will be presented using different series of weights to assess the quality and representativity of the weights produced and to determine the weighting strategy for cycle six and beyond.
