Abstract:

Literature has suggested students are better motivated if the learning activities are related to their own experiences. The use of classroom hands-on activities is a pedagogy that engages students in collecting data related to students' own experience. Many instructors have used hands-on activities. The data collected locally have never been shared with other institutions. Central Michigan University is funded by an NSF/CCLI grant to develop a real-time online database for storing data collected from in-class, hands-on activities. This allows a quick sharing of hands-on activities among instructors in different institutions. Instructors can either have their students participate in the activities or use the data collected by other classes. The purpose is to develop an environment for promoting active learning and engaging students in the process of statistical investigation. Currently, 10 activities are available. This presentation will demonstrate to participants how to use these real-time, hands-on activities in their classes.
