Title: Using an Empirical Problem Solving Framework as a Basis for a Research Methods Short Course Curriculum

Abstract:

With the focus on evidence-based medicine, enhancing the research skills of clinicians is crucial. Short courses are one approach. A short course was developed for pediatric residents to improve their knowledge of research methods. Sessions followed an empirical problem solving approach that focused on stages of the research process. Lectures were provided in five sessions with frequent in-class activities. Course evaluations provided learner feedback. A five-session course is a challenging format for learners and instructors and is unlikely to satisfy everyone. The empirical problem solving approach was useful for course structure. Future offerings would include protected time for attendance and closer session times.
