Abstract:

Rich-client displays of streaming data change over time when the specifications or data change. The specifications change in response to user actions, and the display provides responsive feedback. But data change without user actions, posing the problem of focusing the user's attention on important situational changes while avoiding distractions. One strategy for focusing the user's attention is "velocity cues," graphical representations of the amount and direction of change. To avoid distracting the user, specifications should remain stable and glyphs should remain identifiable over time. This presentation will demonstrate the results of SPSS's latest efforts to integrate interactive and streaming graphics.
