Abstract:

The Federal Committee on Statistical Methodology (FCSM) is an interagency committee dedicated to improving the quality of U.S. federal statistics. The FCSM was founded in 1975 by Maria E. Gonzalez of the Office of Statistical Policy in the Office of Management and Budget. FCSM members are appointed as individuals based on their experience, expertise, and contributions to the federal statistical system, rather than as representatives of their agencies. The initial focus of the FCSM was on recommending standards for statistical methodology to be followed by federal statistical agencies, investigating problems that affect the quality of federal statistical data, and making suggestions for improving statistical methodology in federal agencies. Since 1975, the FCSM has published more than 36 working papers, sponsored seminars and research conferences on federal statistics, and created ongoing interest groups focused on specific statistical issues. In this paper, we will describe the mission of the FCSM and highlight accomplishments and activities over the past 30 years. We also will discuss current and ongoing activities and plans for the future.
