Abstract:

Sonoma State University (SSU) is a suburban university near San Francisco, California, with a relatively few statistics majors. Nevertheless, there are many opportunities to engage students in service learning with organizations off campus. At SSU, statistical service learning takes place in the context of a statistical consulting course. In this talk, details of such learning will be given with examples of student work. Responses of the community are generally positive, though there can be problems if students are not carefully supervised. Students are very positive about the experience.
