Title: Robust Parameter Design: A Historical Perspective

Abstract:

In the 1980s, Genichi Taguchi introduced the concept of robust parameter design. His ideas offered the notion that experimental design and data analysis incorporated in product and process development should focus on the determination of controllable levels of the system that are robust in any process. They cannot be controlled in the process, and their presence presents process variation. Thus the notion of robustness stems from the notion of designing the process (choosing controllable process variables) robust to the inevitable changes in noise variables. This concept and the wealth of information and methodology put forth by the researchers in the 1980s and 90s not only influenced the use of design of experiments and modeling by industrial statisticians, but also significantly altered the way topics were taught in the classroom.
