Abstract:

Estimates of income and disability often differ significantly depending on which data source is used. These differences may affect policy and programs in a profound way. Comparisons of income and disability estimates from major national population-based surveys will be made. Analyses will be performed to determine reasons for differences (i.e., definitional, recall period, sampling universe). Separate analyses will be made for children and working-age adults. Income measures (including poverty and assets) will be person- and family-based. Disability measures also will include key health indicators (i.e., health status, medical utilization). Major national surveys may include the Survey of Income and Program Participation, the Decennial Census, the Current Population Survey, the National Health Interview Survey, and the National Survey of Children and Families (about SSI children). Participation in major federal programs (i.e., SSI, SSDI, Medicare, Medicaid, special education, vocational rehabilitation) also will be included.
