Abstract:

Members of an invited panel at JSM 2000 agreed that lack of a credible covariance matrix presents the biggest problem in choosing a credible sample size for studies using repeated measures. Consequently, such studies often have too small or too large a sample size. An internal pilot design can solve the problem when interim data disagree with the assumptions upon which the original sample size calculations were based. Such designs use some fraction of data to reestimate nuisance parameters and adjust sample size to achieve the target power. Most previous work has focused on univariate outcomes with i.i.d. Gaussian errors. Here, we summarize our current research, which centers on extending the advantages of internal pilot designs to studies with repeated measures.
