Abstract:

Service learning provides a useful way for students to learn both the practice and value of statistical methods. Effective service learning, however, depends on several factors and can be implemented according to a variety of models. In this talk, several models for incorporating service learning in statistics courses will be presented with example courses offered in different disciplines. Examples of community service projects also will be described, including the process of finding, setting up, and managing projects. Finally, principles for good service learning practice will be presented as a means for assessing the quality of a service component.
