Title: Recent Challenges in Metadata Management; Experience within Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia (SORS)

Address: Vozarski pot 12, Ljubljana, 1000, Slovenia
Keywords: statistical metadata systems ; codifying knowledge ; metadata repository
Abstract:

The definition of metadata presents a huge number of opportunities. Indeed, metadata boundaries appear to be expanding with the term's increased usage. User issues are brought to the fore, shifting the emphasis to human-oriented metadata. This raises significant implications for the conception, promotion, design, and implementation of metadata systems. Performing statistical surveys is knowledge intensive operation; there is new knowledge created in the society with every new publication and with every new variable introduced (not mentioning specific statistical methods and operations). Building a metainformation system is codifying knowledge in every sense of the word. Recent developments at SORS will be examined in the paper, namely SORS dissemination function that was supported with METIS repository to the planned degree. Three of METIS repository modules (out of 6) are in production. The Norwegian conceptual solution concerning searching for classifications and items within them was implemented at SORS web site. A terminology database is in production from September 2004. Statistical surveys were documented according to a Swedish template and published on the SORS intranet.
