Abstract:

This presentation will introduce five large-scale data infrastructure projects underway at the Minnesota Population Center (MPC). Each of these projects involves harmonization of data across time and space, the development of machine-understandable metadata, and creation of web-based data access tools. The projects are (1) Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS-USA), a harmonized collection of microdata from U.S. censuses and surveys between 1850 and 2003; (2) IPUMS-International, an effort to extend the IPUMS paradigm to census microdata from more than 40 countries; (3) National Historical Geographic Information System (NHGIS), a project to merge aggregate data for the United States for the period since 1790 with a historical spatial database; (4) North Atlantic Population Project (NAPP), a complete-count census database that includes information on 90 million persons residing in five North Atlantic nations in the late 19th century; and (5) Integrated Health Interview Series (IHIS), a project to harmonize, document, and disseminate data from the National Health Interview Surveys from 1963 and the present.
