Title: Building on SMRP
Author(s): Bruce Levin*+
Companies: Columbia University
Address: 722 West 168th Street, New York, NY, 10032, USA
Keywords: Categorical data ; reliability ; fourfold table
Abstract:

Joe Fleiss' textbook, "Statistical Methods for Rates and Proportions," was a masterful work in its first two editions, giving cogent and accessible advice on how to analyze categorical data to students, researchers, and methodologists. It reflected Joe's considerable influence and authority in matters as diverse as dealing with fourfold tables, improving the reliability of psychiatric and other kinds of diagnoses, and drawing high-quality conclusions from clinical studies. How does one build on such a classic text? In this talk, I will discuss the choices we had to make in terms of content, style, length, complexity, and philosophy in revising SMRP in order to honor Joe's wish to update his book on 20 years' worth of progress.
