Title: An Evidence-based Approach to the Construction of Composite Child Well-being Indices
Author(s): Kenneth C. Land*+
Companies: Duke University
Address: John Franklin Crowell Professor of Sociology and Demography, Durham, NC, 27708-088, U.S.
Keywords: Social Indicators ; Composite Indices ; Child Well-Being
Abstract:

In this paper, I begin with a review of the goals of the founding documents and founders of the social indicators and quality-of-life movements of the 1960s and 1970s. I then take up the question: Where are we now? I review the current state of our knowledge base with respect to the goals of the founding figures of this field. I then focus this question on the topic of measuring changes in child and youth well-being in the United States over the past few decades. In particular, I describe the evidence-based approach used in the construction of the recently developed composite Child Well-Being Index. Some findings from the CWI regarding changes in child and youth well-being in the period 1975--2002 are reported. The paper concludes with possibilities for future work.
