Title: Assessing and Fostering Transferable Knowledge
Author(s): Marsha Lovett*+
Companies: Carnegie Mellon University
Address: 5000 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA, 15213-3890,
Keywords: statistics education ; introductory course ; statistical reasoning ; assessment ; transfer
Abstract:

Statistical reasoning is broadly applicable, and yet introductory statistics students have great difficulty transferring their statistical reasoning skills outside the original learning context. The challenge of "teaching for transfer" is not unique to statistics. This talk will discuss how theories of learning and transfer can be used to develop methods for assessing (and extending) the generality of students' knowledge so students can appropriately transfer what they have learned to new situations.
