Title: When a Placebo Group Is Unethical: A Propensity Score Approach

Abstract:

In many randomized controlled trials, it may be unethical to withhold treatment. Consequently, a placebo group is infeasible. In this paper, we present a propensity score approach for using nontreatment-seeking individuals along with noshows as a pseudocontrol group. To illustrate these methods, we use a longitudinal study designed to compare the efficacy of two psychotherapy treatments to reduce problem drinking.
