Title: Applications of Frank Proschan's Ideas and Methodology to Markov Chains

Abstract:

The work of Frank Proschan in reliability is well-known among both theorists and practitioners. The reliability methodology developed by Proschan and his collaborators has applications to several other fields. This talk will focus on applications to Markov chains in both discrete and continuous time. The theme is that by characterizing a distribution of interest as belonging to a reliability aging class, useful bounds and approximations become readily available. We will present specific examples involving first passage time distributions, approximate exponentiality, and bounds for ergodicity.
