Abstract:

High-throughput genomics experiments measure properties of a massive number of genes simultaneously. Most are noisy and performed to generate ideas and clues for more detailed analyses, rather than to verify well-formed biological hypotheses. Yet, there is an explosion of multiple testing techniques for genomics experiments. Is multiple hypothesis testing a useful fiction in genomics, or are we ignoring the science in favor of something manageable (so to speak) but disconnected from the goals of our colleagues in the lab? This talk will try to help find an answer that works for all data analysis by suggesting the simpler question: Why are we doing this analysis in the first place?
