Abstract:

Assessing the magnitude and patterns of human rights violations has been done by many methods, most frequently via convenience samples of qualitative interviews. In recent work in East Timor and Sierra Leone, parallel projects were conducted to measure past human rights abuses. This paper presents comparative results from three sets of estimates: (i) qualitative interviews collected via convenience samples, (ii) household probability surveys using structured questionnaires, and (iii) multiple systems estimates using the combined, matched datasets.
