Abstract:

Understanding how climate can interact with other factors in determining patterns of species abundance is a persistent challenge in ecology. Recent research has suggested the dynamics some populations exhibit may be a nonlinear and/or nonadditive function of climate, with climate affecting population growth more at high density than at low density. This talk will give a survey of statistical methods useful for exploring and analyzing nonlinearity and/or nonaddivity in ecological systems. In particular, the recent use of the threshold principle for developing methodologies appropriate for analyzing the nonlinearity and/or nonadditivity of the population dynamics with time series data, in a semiparametric framework, will be reviewed.
