Title: Q-BANK: Development of a Tested-Question Database
Author(s): Kristen S. Miller*+
Companies: National Center for Health Statistics
Address: 3311 Toledo Road, Hyattsville, MD, 20782,
Keywords: Cognitive testing ; database ; survey questions
Abstract:

This presentation will describe the development of Q-BANK, an interagency database of survey questions that have been tested within federal questionnaire-design research laboratories. The database catalogues survey questions and links each question to test findings. Questions are searchable not only by content or subject matter (e.g., asthma questions, cancer questions, demographics), but also by question type (e.g., objective characteristics, behavioral reports, attitudes), response category type (e.g., yes/no, open-ended, quantity), and response problem type (e.g., problems with terms, recall problems). I also will describe the motivation behind the conception of Q-BANK and its initial development at the National Center for Health Statistics. I will discuss the impetus for interagency involvement and explain how interagency relationships were fostered in support of Q-BANK as well as address the role of Q-BANK's interagency steering group in overseeing developments and guiding enhancements to the database. Opportunities for the advancement of questionnaire design and implications for methodological research and development will be discussed.
