Title: Gene Expression and the Detection of Viral Contributions to Cancer

Abstract:

That viruses are a contributing factor in cancer biology is well known, but the precise nature of the viral contribution is not. In this paper, some of the statistical problems that arose in a study of Epstein-Barr virus and nasopharyngeal cancer are reviewed. One problem is to measure and calibrate associations between host and virus gene expression. Another problem concerns normalization of microarrays when there is a high degree of differential expression. A third problem concerns scoring gene annotations for enrichment of differential expression. There also is a problem of mapping differentially expressed genes onto the genome. Solutions to these problems are discussed.
