Title: A Permutation Test To Compare Aggregate Matrices of Frequency Data: Young Differ from Older Mexicans on Emotion Labels

Abstract:

Aggregate covariance and correlation matrices serve as the basis for multivariate exploratory techniques (e.g., multidimensional scaling) common in behavioral science. However, making two group comparisons of aggregate matrices and testing for statistical significance has been limited to computing Pearson correlations (proper for interval data) between matrices. This study uses comparative ordinal (frequency) data on the emotion lexicon of young vs. old Mexicans to develop an alternative. Twenty-nine older Mexicans (age 64.8±6.19, education 15.1±3.88) and 30 young Mexicans (age 22.6±2.08, education 14.2±1.84) completed triads comparisons tasks. Fifteen emotion terms (e.g., alegría, odio, dolor) were presented in a balanced incomplete block design so that each person saw 105 triads. On each trial, choosing the most dissimilar term signaled that the other two words were judged similar. Thus, each observation consists of a 15x15 matrix, and numbers in the cells represent the number of times the relevant pair (row and column) was chosen as similar (0, 1, 2, 3).
