Abstract:

Nearest neighbor methods have become increasingly popular in a variety of disciplines, including environmental and natural resources, weather, epidemiology, engineering, and social sciences. In their basic form, these methods may be characterized as a class of nonparametric, multivariate, imputation techniques. The essence of nearest neighbor methods is the imputation of attributes to unobserved units from observed units that are similar with respect to a selected measure. Options for implementing nearest neighbor methods include selection of the similarity measure, weighting schemes, and methods for calculating the value to be imputed. A variety of innovative approaches has been developed for enhancing the quality of nearest neighbor imputations, the speed of computations, and implementation for large datasets. This roundtable discussion will focus on variations of methods and enhancements.
