Title: Agent-based Modeling of Invasive Species

Abstract:

Invasive species cause significant harm to the economy, to the environment, and to human health. It is important to identify susceptible geographical regions and to understand the mechanisms by which their spread is mitigated. This study of selected invasive vascular plants involves a range of statistical methods using data from ground-based observations of prevalence, soil and topographic maps, and satellite observations of various environmental features. The available data are quite sparse, especially over time periods that approach the lifespan of the plants. In addition to statistical analysis of data, we are developing agent-based models to study the spread of the invasive species and their response to various environmental factors. We treat each plant as an agent, then define activities for these agents within a specific landscape. The rules for agents incorporate environmental factors such as local meteorology, nutritional resources, and the competition for limited resources with adjacent plants. The results of the model may explain spatiotemporal invasion trends under the mixed influence of various environmental factors.
