Title: EIA 914 Gas Production Survey and Gas Production Estimates
Author(s): John H. Wood*+
Companies: U.S. Department of Energy
Address: 1000 Independence Ave SW, Washington DC 20585, 20585, United States
Keywords: sampling ; estimation
Abstract:

The 914 survey collects monthly gas production by state from a sample of about 250 gas producing companies. This paper describes features of the data that lead EIA to consider novel estimation methods. The illustrations make use of test files consisting of monthly gas production data from a purchased source by company for 1997--2003. Illustrations include graphs showing the decay in coverage of the cut-off sample based on 85%, 90%, and 95% as a function of years since the selection of the sample. These graphs show the industry is dynamic. Other graphics show the changes throughout time are different for the largest and smallest companies. The patterns in the data were used to develop adjustments to ratio estimators that produce more accurate estimates for total natural gas production.
