Title: Some Properties of Playoff Systems for NCAA I-A Football
Author(s): David Annis*+ and Samuel Wu

Address: Operations Research Dept, Monterey, CA, 93943, United States
Keywords: Ranking ; Tournament ; Football
Abstract:

We discuss properties of various knock-out tournament designs and present theoretical results. We examine potential playoff schemes for Division I-A football via simulation studies. We use several metrics to assess the relative merits of playoff scenarios that differ in selection and seeding of playoff teams. Most suggest that college football would benefit from a limited playoff system.
