Title: Sample-size Determination for the False Discovery Rate

Abstract:

The false discovery rate (FDR) is becoming a widely used measure of statistical significance in multiple testing applications. A simple approximation leads to a general expression relating the FDR to the proportion of tests under the null hypothesis and the arithmetic mean of the powers of tests under the alternative hypothesis. The derived expression suggests an algorithm to determine the sample size required to ensure an acceptably low FDR. This sample-size determination algorithm performs well in traditional simulation studies using computer-generated data and in 'real data simulations' performed by resampling from a large microarray gene expression dataset collected at our institution.
