Abstract:

Dynamic graphic techniques have opened new frontiers in areas of data display and analysis. Several graphical methods for use with compositional data and probability plots are developed and illustrated using the software package Mathematica. Examples and illustrations from remote sensing, environmental sciences, and the food industry will be examined. With a basic understanding of simple probability plots, subjective interpretation of distributional assumptions can be made for univariate families of distributions that contain a shape parameter. Strong visual results are possible for relatively small sample sizes. In conjunction with functions found in Mathematica, the graphical methods developed provide powerful inferences when assessing distributional forms and simple methods for estimating parameter values. We also will illustrate how Mathematica can provide practitioners with the ability to quickly and simply examine compositional and constrained data. The techniques illustrated permit inferences regarding compositional data in the L3 space as well as the L1 constrained space for two variables and the L2 space for three variables.
