Abstract:

An important aspect of a risk analysis of vehicle travel is measuring exposure. Total vehicle miles traveled, number of registered drivers, and number of registered vehicles are commonly used exposure measures, but each has drawbacks. Improved measures are developed to account for the time of day, type of vehicle, urban versus rural travel, segment of the population under study, and other pertinent factors. Data from the National Household Travel Survey and the Fatality Analysis Reporting System will be used to illustrate the measures.
