Abstract:

This talk will describe an undergraduate seminar that introduces statistical concepts within the context of interesting questions in sports. Using the recently published Anthology of Statistics in Sports, the seminar discusses articles on rating the performance of players and teams; the existence of the "hot-hand" in basketball, baseball, and hockey; predicting the outcomes of games; and understanding the significance of unusual outcomes---such as a perfect game in baseball.
