Title: An Online Integrated System for Genome-wide Coexpression Study by Liquid Association

Abstract:

Statistical similarity analysis has been applied in almost all microarray data studies. A working assumption is that genes with highly correlated profiles tend to be functionally associated. The converse of this assumption, however, does not hold and most of functionally related genes turn out uncorrelated. Liquid association (LA) is a more advanced notion for describing the interaction between two genes as mediated by a third gene. In this talk, I will explain the concepts and applications of LA for studying diseases such as multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease. In addition to the statistical ideas, I will share my experience in developing an online system to manage the enormous amount of information distilled by LA. There are a growing number of microarray and other biological databases available in the public domain. The ultimate goal is to integrate results from different species, such as Yeast, Human, Mouse, C elegant, and E coli. One guiding principle is that all outputs from one round of statistical analysis should be pipeline-ready for the next.
