Abstract:

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) established the National Visualization and Analytics Center (NVAC) to support DHS visual analytic needs in areas such as threat and vulnerability assessment. Visual analytics is the science of analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces. The NVAC mission is to promote the development and deployment of the next generation suite of relevant visual analytics through collaborations with academia, industry, and other government laboratories. An important early component of the NVAC far-reaching mission is to establish a national science and technology agenda for visual analytics. Toward this end, NVAC gathered a panel of experts from around the nation to characterize the state-of-the-art and recommend research directions. A second mission component is to establish regional (RVAC) and industrial (IVAC) centers that engage in research and development. A third component is to encourage the education of next-generation talent base in visual analytics. This talk provides more background and highlights sections from the panel's book.
