This is the preliminary program for the 2005 Joint Statistical Meetings in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Currently included in this program is the "technical" program, schedule of invited, topic contributed, regular contributed and poster sessions; Continuing Education courses (August 7-10, 2005); and Committee and Business Meetings. This on-line program will be updated frequently to reflect the most current revisions.

Abstract - #302388
Title: Extensions of Penalized Spline Regression for Natural Resource Monitoring Applications
Author(s): Jay Breidt*+
Companies: Colorado State University
Address: 201 Statistics, Fort Collins, CO, 80523-1877,
Keywords: nonparametric regression ; environmental statistics ; small area estimation
Abstract:

Penalized splines have a number of useful features that make them ideally suited for application in natural resource monitoring. They complement standard linear mixed modeling by flexibly describing nonlinear features in a fairly automatic way. They are easily implemented in standard statistical software and are readily extended to novel application contexts. Two examples illustrate this flexibility and extensibility: small area estimation of soil profiles and spatial smoothing on stream networks.
