Title: The Grant Review Process at NIH

Abstract:

This presentation will provide a general overview of the process used at NIH to review investigator-initiated grant proposals. The various phases of the process will be described, including presubmission, assignment of proposals to a study section, review, and postreview. The composition and function of study sections and what happens during a study section meeting will be detailed, with particular emphasis on the Biostatistical Methods and Research Design study section. Common problems encountered with applications will be reviewed, and requirements for handling human subjects in grant applications will be presented. Lastly, some tips on where to find information about programmatic interests, various grant mechanisms, grant preparation, and the grant review process will be provided.
