Abstract:

The popular press is full of stories about a biodiversity crisis. The numbers vary, but one common one is that a 1,000 species are lost each year. What is the scientific basis for these estimates? Where do they come from? We will examine the source of some popular "estimates'' of the total number of species in the world and the current extinction rate, then discuss alternative methods to estimate these numbers.
