Abstract:

The purpose of mutation accumulation is to answer two questions--the rate at which mutations occur and the distribution of mutation effect size. The number of mutations affecting a particular trait cannot be observed, nor can the effect sizes of those mutations. Thus both the number of mutations and the mutation effect sizes are latent variables. Current statistical models for mutation accumulation data contain simplistic and unrealistic assumptions and don't reflect known biological mechanisms, which is well-known to scientists using these models. Different scientists have used different parametric models for mutation effect size. We calculate model misspecification errors for these models using Monte Carlo.
