Abstract #302216

This is the preliminary program for the 2003 Joint Statistical Meetings in San Francisco, California. Currently included in this program is the "technical" program, schedule of invited, topic contributed, regular contributed and poster sessions; Continuing Education courses (August 2-5, 2003); and Committee and Business Meetings. This on-line program will be updated frequently to reflect the most current revisions.

Abstract:

The interpoint distance distribution ("idd") can be used to reduce the dimensionality of multivariate samples and to test deviations from assumed null distributions, without the need for specifying the distribution of the original coordinates of the observations. For example, the idd can be used to test deviations in a sample of points on the plane from a known spatial distribution. In this setting one may be interested in detecting deviations in the direction of spatial clustering. We discuss the use of parametric models for the idd, and the estimation of the associated parameters from the highly dependent interpoint distances observed from a random sample of coordinates.
