Abstract:

Regional differences in cancer rates and types may help researchers identify the underlying causes and characteristics of the disease. This paper analyzes cancer incidence and survival time using data from the SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results) Public Data Set. S-Plus and an SQL database were employed to examine the association between various types of treatment (beam radiation, radioisotopes, etc.), morphology, and survival times. In addition, Graphical Information Systems was used to graphically illustrate regional differences. A categorical data model was used to predict a patient's cause of death, type of cancer, survival rate throughout the treatment cycle, and survival time on a region-by-region basis. The study focuses particularly on California and the San Francisco Bay Area.
