Abstract #301950

This is the preliminary program for the 2003 Joint Statistical Meetings in San Francisco, California. Currently included in this program is the "technical" program, schedule of invited, topic contributed, regular contributed and poster sessions; Continuing Education courses (August 2-5, 2003); and Committee and Business Meetings. This on-line program will be updated frequently to reflect the most current revisions.

Abstract:

A multidimensional, factorialy independent scale to measure ingratiatory behavior in work organizations was developed and tested on a sample (n=294) of managers from seven diverse organizations. The original scale consisting of seven subscales of five items each was subjected to a varimax rotated factor analysis--resulting in a 26-item five dimensional scale. Two criteria were used to retain the items after factor analysis: First the solution was constrained using the criteria of eigenvalues greater than 1.00, and meeting the criteria of factor loadings generally not less than 0.30 on the defining component and no cross loadings greater than 0.25. Second, only those items were retained that had high intercorrelations within a factor but a low correlation with remaining factors. The scale demonstrates high internal consistency reliability and substantial content, convergent, and discriminant validities.
