Title: New Methods for the Analysis of Functional Neuroimaging Data

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a powerful tool for helping neuroscientists to understand the way in which the human mind works. The data acquired from a typical fMRI experiment, on even a single subject, are large and complex, providing a natural role for statisticians. Recently, as knowledge of what takes place at the level of voxels (volume elements, the basic unit of measurement) has deepened, we have shifted the focus of our interest to the true scientific questions, namely, studying individual and group behavior. I will give a brief introduction to functional neuroimaging and the statistical challenges posed by the data. I will then discuss some of the new statistical methods we have been developing. These include techniques for combining subjects and for comparing groups of subjects, modern approaches to the problem of thresholding (deciding which voxels are active and which aren't), as well as new models for the underlying physiological and psychological processes.
