Abstract:

Privacy, Confidentiality, and Data Security (PCDS) have become critical national issues. Government and private organizations often collect data from persons, businesses, or other entities and pledge confidentiality treatment. Before disseminating the results as either public-use microdata files or tables, the organizations should apply statistical disclosure limitation methods to protect confidentiality. The number of methodologies is increasing and finding wider application. Professionals working with identifiable data are seeking guidance in understanding PCDS issues, recommended best practices, and tools/methods. In response to this need, the ASA's Committee on Privacy and Confidentiality has created a PCDS Training Website. The goal is to provide instruction and resources to statisticians and nonstatisticians. Today this site serves as a repository for existing internet-based PCDS information and resources. The next phase will be to create a user-guided instructional center. This demonstration will introduce the site and illustrate examples of how the information may be used. This initiative is responsive to ASA's strategic goals.
