Abstract #301830

This is the preliminary program for the 2003 Joint Statistical Meetings in San Francisco, California. Currently included in this program is the "technical" program, schedule of invited, topic contributed, regular contributed and poster sessions; Continuing Education courses (August 2-5, 2003); and Committee and Business Meetings. This on-line program will be updated frequently to reflect the most current revisions.

Abstract:

There is increasing interest in automated surveillance of disease data with the goal of detecting emergent trends and/or localized outbreaks of disease (or other health events), particularly with respect to early detection of a potential bioterrorism event. We review some typical aspects of health surveillance data and illustrate some impacts of these features on statistical tests to detect data anomolies. Specifically, we use simulation to assess power of statistical tests to detect disease "clusters" illustrating resultant impacts of data aggregation, population heterogeneity, and severity of impact.
