Abstract:

The genetic basis of inherited traits has been studied through different approaches in many areas of science. Examples include quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis and mutant analysis in genetics; genome sequencing and gene expression analysis in genomics. Each of the approaches is used for the investigation of complex traits, such as disease resistance, but provides knowledge limited to its own area. In recent years, there has been a growing agreement on the integration of the two areas, which allows a comprehensive dissection of complex traits and their genomic architecture. In this work, we define a new concept called expression level polymorphism (ELP) and introduce a novel functional genomics approach that applies QTL analysis to quantitative differences in the expression of trait-related genes, and provides a unified analysis of the entire regulatory network for complex traits. Statistical issues are also addressed in the ELP framework.
