Abstract:

Partners for Child Passenger Safety (PCPS) is the nation's only large-scale surveillance system specific to children in passenger vehicle crashes. PCPS links State Farm Insurance claims data to telephone survey and crash investigation data. From 12/1/98 to 11/30/02, data were collected on a probability sample of 19,125 children less than 16 years of age involved in a crash in a State Farm insured passenger vehicle, representing a population of 243,540 children in passenger vehicle crashes. Within the U.S. passenger vehicle fleet, there is great variation (passenger cars, SUV, and passenger vans being the most common) that extends to size and/or classification differences within each vehicle type. Previous studies with adult occupants have demonstrated a relationship between injury risk and vehicle size of both the occupants' vehicle as well as factors surrounding the collision, such as the size of the other vehicle (if applicable). In this analysis we consider the risk to child occupants as a function of the vehicle type in which they are riding, as well as how these injury risks change as a function of the other vehicle struck in multi-vehicle collisions.
