Title: Physiological Noise in fMRI

Abstract:

Functional MRI experiments employ statistical methods to test for activation because the BOLD contrast is often comparable to the noise. The noise includes components from thermal sources in the head, RF coil and associated electronics, as well as from fluctuations in the NMR signal. These fluctuations result from instrument instabilities that modulate the signal as well as physiological contributions from the subject, with the latter dominating, especially at higher fields. The physiological components in turn are caused by cardiovascular-induced pulsatility, respiration induced modulations in the magnetic field and fluctuations in blood flow/volume due to basal metabolism and autonomic hemodynamic regulation. Respiratory effects are pernicious because they cause breathing-correlated movement of EPI images in the phase encoding direction. This talk reviews these factors and examines methods developed to reduce the effects of several of these physiological noise sources. These correction methods include retrospective correction for cardiac and respiratory modulation in image space and k-space as well as prospective correction for respiration.
